From Cluttered to Clear: My Decluttering Journey

Welcome! I’m Sharon, and this is where I share my decluttering journey—one that started in a cluttered closet and evolved into a mission to help women simplify their homes and their lives.

I wasn’t always tidy. But after downsizing and getting overwhelmed, I found a better way. Now I help others do the same.

If you’re overwhelmed by clutter, unsure where to begin, or tired of the pressure to be “Pinterest-perfect,” you’re not alone. I’ve been there too—and I created Declutzy to help.

Believe it or not, I’m a self-proclaimed decluttering guru. Well, maybe not always! The truth is, I wasn’t exactly born organized. I had clutter. I had mess. No one who knew me would have ever guessed I’d one day be helping others clear their homes. But here I am.

Me on my decluttering journey

How it All Started

I got to this point the hard way: I let clutter overwhelm me until I had no choice but to deal with it. What I learned along the way is that with a bit of structure and the right approach, decluttering your home doesn’t have to be hard. If someone like me can do it, you can too.

My Story: A Lifetime of Accumulation

Over the years, I held many jobs, explored countless hobbies, and traveled widely. My home reflected that lifestyle—and so did the clutter. It didn’t bother me much at first. I had spare rooms and storage space to hide it all. But then my husband and I decided to downsize.

Our Big Move

As recently retired (young!) seniors, we no longer needed a big house in Pennsylvania. We were ready for more sunshine and a simpler lifestyle, so we moved to Florida. I loved our new home—smaller, easier to clean, and full of light. But there was one problem: no storage space.

Even though we decluttered before the move, we still brought too much stuff “just in case.” On top of that, we had inherited many belongings from our parents, which we stored in airtight containers out of guilt and emotional attachment. But they took up space—a lot of it.

The Breaking Point

Unpacking became overwhelming. I stuffed things into drawers and closets just to get the boxes out of sight. Before long, I couldn’t find what I needed, and everything felt chaotic. Our garage and spare room became dumping grounds. I was drowning in clutter and didn’t know where to begin.

Experimenting with Decluttering Methods

That’s when I decided to take action. I turned to books, blogs, and YouTube videos, trying every method I could find: 12-12-12, KonMari, minimalist challenges, zone cleaning—you name it. Each had its pros and cons, and I began documenting which methods worked best for different situations.

I get bored easily, so switching things up kept me interested. I took notes, photos, and videos to track my progress and stay motivated. This website is the result of that journey.

My Honest Approach isn’t one-size-fits-all, and my goal is to help you find the approach that works for you.
